When winter rolls around, we often get asked: “Can you still paint in this weather?” The short answer is: yes, but with a few conditions.
Winter painting in Christchurch is definitely possible – especially indoors – but it takes a bit more planning and flexibility. Here’s what you need to know.
Exterior painting in winter? It depends on the weather.
Sunny, mild days are ideal for exterior painting, but sometimes you must work with less-than-perfect weather. Paint can still dry at cooler temperatures if drying agents are added, allowing for application down to about 5°C. That said, the dew point remains more critical than the air temperature. Staying mindful of this ensures your paint adheres well and dries evenly.
The biggest factor with outdoor painting is moisture. Even the best-quality paint won’t stick well to a wet surface, so we need a dry spell before, during, and after painting.
We also need to factor in:
-
Daytime temperatures – paint cures best in warmer weather, but we can adjust for that
-
Shorter days – the painting window is smaller, so jobs may take a little longer
-
Drying time between coats – this can stretch out if the air is cool and damp
Interior painting is easier in winter
Inside, things are a bit more straightforward. As long as the room is dry and we can get some ventilation going, we’re good to go. In fact, winter can be a great time to tackle that repaint you’ve been putting off – especially if you’re already hunkered down at home.
What makes the difference?
The key to winter painting is knowing when to go ahead – and when to wait. We keep a close eye on the forecast and won’t book jobs unless we’re confident the conditions are right. We’d rather delay by a day or two than do a rush job that won’t last.
