How do you handle paint fumes and ventilation?

Most paints we use are low in fumes, but good airflow always helps. If you have respiratory concerns, let us know – we’ve got options to help.

One of the most common concerns we hear is, “What about the smell?”  The good news is, paint has come a long way – especially the water-based kinds we use most often. But it’s still worth knowing what to expect, and how to keep your home comfortable during and after painting.

Most of our paints are low in fumes

We primarily use water-based paints with low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). These are designed to be safer for indoor use and far less smelly than the older solvent-based options. You might notice a slight odour during painting, but it usually disappears quite quickly – especially with a bit of airflow.

We recommend good ventilation

While painting, and for a few hours afterwards, we recommend keeping windows and doors open where possible. A bit of fresh air goes a long way in helping the paint dry and any lingering smell to clear.

If the weather’s not playing ball, we might use a dehumidifier or fan to help move things along. And if you’re not sure what to expect, just ask – we’ll let you know how to plan for the space we’re working in.

What if you have respiratory issues or sensitivities?

If anyone in your household has asthma or other respiratory concerns, please let us know. We can:

  • Choose the most suitable low-odour or low-VOC products

  • Adjust our schedule to do certain rooms when you’re away

  • Suggest whether it’s worth staying out of the house for a day or two

We’re not just here to paint walls – we’re here to make the whole process easier on you.

Some specialty paints need extra care

Every now and then, we do need to use oil-based or specialist paints, particularly on trims, doors, or exteriors. These paints can have a stronger smell and may take a little longer to fully air out.

In those cases, we’ll let you know in advance and give you practical options – including whether it’s worth taking a short break away from home during that part of the job.
