paint and rain

What happens if it rains during an exterior job?

Rain during an exterior job? We might pause, prep what we can, or reschedule. We won’t paint unless the weather’s right – it’s not worth doing twice.

Let’s get this out of the way—painting in the rain is a no-go. Wet surfaces and moisture in the air prevent paint from sticking properly, often leading to peeling or blistering down the road. While there are workarounds like expensive shelters or additives, they rarely deliver the same quality and can even void your paint’s warranty. For a durable, beautiful finish, it’s best to wait until Mother Nature cooperates.

So what happens if we’re painting your house exterior and the weather takes a turn?

In short: we work around it.

We always keep a close eye on the forecast before starting an exterior job. But sometimes, rain can sneak in anyway. Here’s how we handle it.

If it starts raining during the job…

If paint is already on the wall and the rain starts while it’s still drying, we may need to pause and assess the surface once it’s dry again. If it’s early enough in the day, and conditions clear up, we might be able to pick up where we left off later.

In most cases, we’ll simply stop painting and see what we can do safely. We might:

  • Tidy up and cover any gear
  • Focus on prep work that can still be done under cover
  • Postpone the topcoat until the surface is fully dry again

Sometimes we’ll need to reschedule

If it’s a proper rainy day or the surface is too wet to work with, we’ll reschedule that part of the job. We won’t paint in conditions that might compromise the quality or durability of the finish – it’s not worth the risk, for you or for us.

Why we don’t take chances with weather

Wet surfaces and paint don’t mix. If we paint over damp timber or plaster, it can lead to bubbling, poor adhesion, or peeling later on. And that just means the job has to be redone – which no one wants.

We’ll always prioritise doing it right, even if that means waiting a day or two longer.
