What prep work is involved before painting starts?

Before we paint, we inspect surfaces, fix defects, apply primer, and yes – there’s sanding. Good prep makes all the difference to the final result.

Painting might seem like the main event – but the prep work beforehand is what really makes it look good (and last). Whether we’re painting your living room, hallway, or the whole house, getting the surfaces ready is a crucial part of what we do.

So what happens before the paint goes on?

First, we take the time to check every surface carefully. We look for:

before
before
  • Dents, cracks, or scratches

  • Stains or water damage

  • Loose paint or flaking areas

  • Joints that need resealing

Every house is different, especially here in Christchurch where weather, movement, or older building materials can leave their mark.

We use the right products for the job

Once we’ve identified what needs attention, we:

  • Use specialist fillers suited to the surface – plasterboard and timber need different approaches

  • Prime any stained or patched areas with high-quality primers to ensure even coverage

  • Sand where needed – and yes, there’s always some sanding involved (we tidy up after ourselves, promise)

The goal is to create a smooth, stable surface that the paint can adhere to properly. Good prep also helps prevent problems later, like peeling, bubbling, or patchy finishes.

Why this matters for your job

Skipping or rushing the prep work can lead to a job that looks average – or worse, needs redoing. We don’t cut corners. It might take a little longer upfront, but it means a better, longer-lasting result.
