If you’ve ever wondered whether paint is just paint – it’s not. Interior and exterior paints might look similar in the tin, but they’re made for very different jobs.
Exterior paint is built to handle the outdoors
Here in Christchurch – and across New Zealand – our weather can be hard on homes. Sun, rain, frost, wind, and salt air can all do damage over time. That’s why exterior paint is specially formulated to cope with:
-
UV exposure from strong sunlight
-
Rain and moisture
-
Temperature changes and expansion/contraction
-
Fungal growth like mould or mildew
These paints have extra components to help them stick to the surface, last longer, and look better for years – even when the weather isn’t kind.
Interior paint focuses on finish and cleanability
Interior paints don’t need to stand up to the elements, so they’re designed with other priorities in mind. These paints are:
-
Smoother to apply
-
Easier to wipe clean (depending on the finish)
-
Less likely to fade indoors
-
Low in odour and safer for enclosed spaces
They’re made for living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms – places where durability and aesthetics matter, but the sun and rain aren’t trying to wear them down.
Is exterior paint more expensive?
Yes, usually a little. It has more additives to help it resist weather and UV damage, which pushes the price up slightly. But it’s worth the investment – using the wrong type of paint outside can lead to flaking, fading, or water damage sooner than you’d expect.
